Asset Management
A substantial portion of Nelnet's earnings comes from asset management—the acquisition, management, and ownership of our student loan portfolio. As of September 30, 2011, Nelnet owned more than $24 billion of federal student loans.
Student loans consist of federally insured student loans (minimal credit risk) and non-federally insured student loans (with credit risk similar to other bank loans). The vast majority of our student loans are federally insured.
