Lincoln, Neb., November 9, 2006 – Nelnet (NYSE: NNI) and the company's Loan Generation Origination Services department manager Kelli Schweitzer recently accepted the "Patriot Award" Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Department of Defense’s National Committee of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR).

The Patriot Award recognizes corporations and employers for policies and practices that are supportive of employee participation in the National Guard and Reserve. The award was established to reinforce the idea that corporations like Nelnet can contribute to national security and protect liberty and freedom in our nation through their support of military personnel.

Lane Barnason, a Nelnet employee and active duty reserve component member, originated the nomination for Nelnet and Schweitzer, his manager, because he is grateful for the support they have shown of his military duty.

Schweitzer was presented with a commemorative certificate of appreciation and a patriot lapel pin from the Department of Defense.

"I would like to extend my thanks to Lane and the ESGR for this award," said Schweitzer. "It is an honor for Nelnet and me to be recognized for supporting the courageous men and women serving in the U.S. military. My own father and grandfathers served, so I understand how important it is to help military personnel as much as we can."

All members of the National Guard and Reserve forces are eligible to nominate their employers for the "Patriot Award" certificate.
