// Why Go Paperless?

By opting in to paperless communications, you're reducing your dependence on paper, discovering an easier way to store your records, saving time, and reducing clutter. You'll find it easier to manage your eStatements as well—access all your account correspondence 24/7 at Nelnet.com.

// The Impact of Paper

We all use it, but many of the transactions, notifications, and announcements made using paper can be performed just as effectively with electronic correspondence. Switching to eStatements makes a difference in the environment, in your home, and in the future of our planet.

  • Every year, enough paper is thrown away to make a twelve-foot wall from New York to California.
  • For every 100 pounds of trash, 35 pounds is paper.
  • Paper makes up 30-40% of American landfill space.
  • The average American uses more than 748 pounds of paper per year.

// Why We're Replanting Pike National Forest

It was June of 2002. The Pike National Forest had seen five years of below-average precipitation levels, unseasonably dry air, and high winds. The conditions, coupled with the lack of regional fires for nearly 100 years, had set the scene.

The fire sparked slowly, then spread throughout the forest, raging on for 20 days. By the time the last flame was relinquished, 137,760 acres and 600 buildings had been scorched. Habitats of threatened and endangered species were in jeopardy and the downstream water reservoir serving 75% of the state's population was running low, leaving Colorado in crisis.

A decade later, it's time to change the forest's destiny. Nelnet has partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to reforest this treasured slice of Colorado. For each borrower who switches from paper communications to eStatements and correspondence, we'll plant one tree. It's your chance to make a difference. Help us go paperless and replant Pike National Forest—one tree at a time.

// Why Plant Trees?

Can planting a tree really make a difference? Yes. As soon as a seedling is planted, it starts pulling carbon dioxide out of the air. Over the tree's lifetime, it can absorb approximately one ton of CO2. That adds up when you consider an entire forest. Native trees also help to control flooding, clean up local water supplies, and create habitats for birds and other wildlife.

Trees improve air quality, recycle water, create shade, and provide food and homes for living things across the planet. The simple act of planting trees helps sustain the environment in countless ways.

  • Suffer from allergies? Trees improve air quality—eradicating pesky pollen, dust, smoke, and ash.
  • Trees absorb carbon dioxide and create oxygen. An acre of trees produces roughly 65,000 lbs of oxygen—enough to supply 168 people with a yearly supply of oxygen.
  • Wooded areas prevent erosion by holding soil and prevent rain runoff by holding moisture in leaves, branches, and roots. This replenishes ground water supply and decreases flood potential. One hundred mature trees can catch nearly 250,000 gallons of water each year.
  • Native trees also help create habitats and food for birds and other wildlife.
